I’ve been fighting for justice, many kinds of justice, for nearly sixty years, and am currently an active member of Nebraskans for Peace / Palestinian Rights Task Force as well as an active member of Omaha Socialists. I earned MA and PhD degrees from Cornell University in the early 1970’s and taught theatre in higher education from 1972 through 2018, with a break for two years touring with the Dakota Theatre Caravan from 1979 – 1981. I started that group in my home state in 1977 to help develop plays and production methods to meet the needs of rural Great Plains people to have their stories told and celebrated with theatre. He joined the UNO theatre faculty in 1981. In 1984 I and group of UNO students and faculty started the Diner Theatre in Benson to tell the stories of a city neighborhood.
In 1991 I encountered the remarkable and revolutionary theatre practice of Brazilian director Augusto Boal and his Theatre of the Oppressed. I was already familiar with the work of Paulo Freire from study groups in graduate school, which made my encounter with TO and Boal all the more energizing. This led to the formation of the Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Conference in 1995, now in its 27th year. I still teach TO and PO in Omaha and elsewhere.
After retiring in 2018, I’ve has been active with Omaha Tenants United, Omaha Socialists, the Palestinian Rights Task Force as well as rearing six cats with my wife Marghee.
